OTM Sendoff

Guests recently celebrated a decade of Operation Thin Mint® Sendoffs aboard the USS Midway Museum.

May 2014

Saluting great partnerships

Girl Scouts’ empathy for deployed military personnel inspired Operation Thin Mint® (OTM) after 9/11.The collective energy of our Girl Scouts, their supporters and the entire community has fueled OTM’s phenomenal mission over the last 13 years.

On May 3, nearly 3,000 Girl Scouts and friends gathered aboard the USS Midway Museum for the 10th consecutive year to celebrate shipping 198,470 boxes of cookies to military troops far from home. (See photos, U-T article and video.)

To date, San Diegans have donated a grand total of nearly 2.5 million boxes, accompanied by countless "notes to show we care." Sendoff festivities included skydivers, Uncle Sam on stilts, and remarks from Congressman Vargas and military brass. The stars of the big event were our 31 Girl Scout cookie top sellers. As a reward for their hard work, many of these young entrepreneurs arrived by helicopter.

The USS Midway Museum is one of our valued sendoff partners, along with Five-Star General sponsor Wells Fargo and Cox Communications, our Four-Star sponsor. Many thanks to them ... and all who participated in Operation Thin Mint® Sendoff to honor the men and women who serve our nation.

Archery

Bringing Girl Scouting to all girls
Clairemont Service Unit was right on target with Enchanted Archery, its “bring-a-buddy” recruitment event at our Balboa Campus. Sereen (left) and other Girl Scouts invited friends to meet them at the Fran Styles Archery Range for target practice and crafts. Even Daisies and Brownies joined in, loosing volleys of suction-cup arrows! Contact our membership team for ideas of how to participate in the spring membership campaign, when girls and volunteers share the wonderful experience of Girl Scouting with their communities.

Doodle Bugs camp

Spring into camp
During Doodle Bugs spring day camp at our Balboa Campus, girls watched butterflies, took nature walks, crafted bug habitats and dug through compost for slugs and grubs (see album). Junior entomologists wrapped up the week of art and animals with a trip across the street to the San Diego Zoo. Plenty more Girl Scout camp adventures await girls in grades K-12 this summer; find details here.

Doodle Bugs campers Bethany and Abby encounter a peach beetle grub in the composting bin.

SHARE fashion show

Something to SHARE
Hip, hip, hooray to members of the Coronado Service Unit for finding a unique way to help people SHARE. Their “Fashion with Compassion” event supported San Diego Rescue Mission and our SHARE (Share her Annual Real Expense) campaign. That program helps bridge the gap between Girl Scouts’ $15 membership dues and the actual, $330 annual cost of providing quality programs for each girl. Please consider contributing by contacting Dawn Bruckel at (619) 610-0705.
