Glamping it up for Girl Scouts

More than 500 grown-ups came out to play, dance, bid and mingle on the grounds of our spectacular new Balboa Lodge during last month's Urban Glampout fundraiser. Carol M. Dedrich, MBA, CFRE (Union-Tribune column), who becomes our CEO on Oct. 10, was a special guest.

Headed by Event Co-chairs Sue and John Major and Committee Chair Liza Crisafi, Urban Glampout was a big hit, bringing in a record-breaking $520,000. Visit our website to peruse the sponsor list, photos and an inspiring video shown that evening. Thank you to all the guests, donors, sponsors and volunteers whose participation is helping us keep Girl Scouting affordable and available to all girls. Proceeds support invaluable leadership experiences like Camp Exec. (See next story.)

We're thrilled that Liza will return to chair our 20th annual Urban Campout next year, and that Past President Katie Sullivan and her three daughters will serve as honorary co-chairs. Mark your calendar for Friday, Sept. 15, 2017!

Warm regards,

Gerry L. Keshka
Interim Chief Executive Officer

Happy new (membership) year!
Girl Scouts like Melanie are among the 35,000 girl and adult members who are excited about embarking on the 2016-17 membership year this month. Melanie and her sister Brownies of Troop 1243 look forward to earning a Hiking badge during a bird watching trek, attending the Brownie Sleepover at our Balboa Campus and serving people in need through a Take Action project. And that's just in the next few weeks! They have plenty more adventures in store.

Camp Exec weekend

Camp Exec: Mentors + mentees = exponential potential
During the first-ever Camp Exec, held recently at our Camp Whispering Oaks mountain property, 18 teen Girl Scouts paired up one-to-one with 18 accomplished female professionals for a unique, three-day leadership development program. Through panel discussions and individual conversations, the girls learned about their mentors' career journeys in business, the arts, engineering, finance and other fields. Session topics included personal branding, etiquette, college preparation and financial literacy. The multi-generational campers also enjoyed outdoor team-building activities like archery, yoga and taking on the high ropes challenge course. Camp Exec was funded in part by Wells Fargo and SDG&E (gold and bronze sponsors, respectively). To learn how to take part in next year's event, contact Program Director Jen Nation at (619) 610-0726.

"One Book" program teams up with Girl Scouts
We're partnering with KPBS to promote two great causes — literacy and Girl Scouts — by co-hosting "One Book for Kids: Reading Fun with Girl Scouts San Diego." Open to all ages, the free workshops take place from 1-3 p.m. in eight public libraries during October and November.

Activities include a reading from The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce, a screening of the Academy Award-winning short film of the same name, and related crafts. Girl Scouts recruitment staff will be on hand to engage prospective members and volunteers. The first 50 children to arrive at each workshop will receive a free copy of the story and a patch. The sessions, and an upcoming book signing with the author, are part of KPBS' 10th annual One Book, One San Diego program. For details, contact Troop Support Specialist Minhhieu Phamvu at (619) 610-0776.
