Cool Women in the spotlight

Congratulations to the Cool Women Class of 2017! It was an honor to pay tribute to these exemplary role models during our 17th annual Cool Women luncheon and celebration. Girl Scouts San Diego board member Julia Brown and Judge M. Margaret McKeown (Cool Women of '05 and '04, respectively) were co-chairs. Emcee Marcella Lee covered the event, creating a feature story that aired on CBS News 8.

During the awards ceremony, each Cool Woman was introduced by a teen Girl Scout who had interviewed the honoree. New to the Cool Women program this year: a morning mentoring session where older Girl Scouts had an opportunity to meet Cool Women inductees and alumnae, learning how these inspiring women forged their careers.

We appreciate everyone who took part! Special thanks to our Gold Sponsor, Mission Federal Credit Union, as well as partners KPBS, SDG&E, Southwest Airlines and Paradise Point Resort. Event proceeds will help keep Girl Scouting available and affordable for more than 35,000 local members. Visit our Cool Women page for photos, the event program and a San Diego Union-Tribune article.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Carol M. Dedrich, MBA, CFRE

Volunteers empowering girls to grow
April is Volunteer Appreciation month — a great time to applaud the 13,000 local adults who make Girl Scouting possible. Every day, they provide girls with leadership experiences filled with fun, friendship and discovery.

Throughout this month, and on National Leaders Day (Sunday, April 22), let's collectively celebrate the invaluable contributions of our volunteers. Find ideas on our website … like entering our You Help Me Grow photo contest, spotlighting leaders during a meeting or donating to our SHARE campaign in their name. Another way to honor champions who bring the Girl Scout mission to life is to nominate them (by Sunday, April 30) for an adult recognition. We'll present awards at our 2017 Volunteer Conference and Celebration, Saturday, Aug. 26. In the meantime, a big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers!

Appreciate a volunteer!

San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts presents the county proclamation to Girl Scouts San Diego.

Whereas … Girl Scouts turns 100
Happy birthday, Girl Scouts San Diego … officially! Our local council was born a century ago when Troop 1 formed in Coronado. To commemorate the occasion, "Girl Scouts San Diego Day" was declared on March 12 (National Girl Scout Day) in the cities of Coronado and San Diego and throughout San Diego County.

In addition to a proclamation by Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey, Girl Scout officials accepted two others initiated by County Supervisor Ron Roberts and San Diego City Council Members Chris Cate and Lorie Zapf. Visit our website to read the proclamations, see photos and video of the presentations, and get the details about upcoming 100th anniversary events.

OTM Sendoff: Evening picnic and museum tour
Everyone's invited aboard the USS Midway Museum on Friday, May 5, 6-10 p.m. for our 16th annual Operation Thin MintSM (OTM) Sendoff. Invite your friends and family to this free event, where you'll spend an exciting evening on the flight deck for a patriotic pep rally and music by the Suffragettes — an all-female band that has performed at Downtown Disneyland. Bring a picnic and enjoy a spirited program, then stay for a museum tour. Sponsors helping make the Sendoff possible include Cox Communications, Wells Fargo and SDG&E.

This is a wonderful opportunity to salute the men and women who protect and serve our country. During the event, top cookie sellers will arrive and depart by helicopter. Since 2002, generous San Diegans have donated more than 2.7 million boxes of OTM cookies. Ooh-rah!

Girl Scouts at One San Diego

Four stars, four years in a row
Girl Scouts San Diego received a coveted four-star rating — the highest possible score — from Charity Navigator, the largest evaluator of U.S. nonprofits. The favorable review indicates that we adhere to best practices, execute our mission in a financially efficient manner, and maintain strong fiscal health and a commitment to accountability and transparency. This our fourth consecutive year receiving four stars, an achievement attained by just 10 percent of charities nationwide.

Give to Girl Scouts!

Girl Scouts Incredible Race

Incredible Race lives up to its name!
During our 7th annual Incredible Race, girls in grades K-8 embarked on an adventurous scavenger hunt, racing around Balboa Park to find historic landmarks, solve puzzles and take on physical challenges (pictures). Participants worked together to overcome obstacles while fostering collaboration and camaraderie. Community partner Suja Juice provided cold-pressed refreshments.

All girls received a patch and finisher medal. The following teams earned awards: First place (Courageous & Strong), Troop 3904 (pictured); Teamwork (Considerate & Caring), Troops 3049 and 3079; Most Spirit (Friendly & Helpful), Troop 4794. High fives to these teams and all the competitors!
